English Learners

A three-module series for educators including three virtual community of practice sessions with AIM facilitators to develop expert-level knowledge to accelerate language and literacy proficiency for English Learners (ELs) in any program model with tools and resources to support immediate instructional applications.

Each course module features 2-3 hours of asynchronous learning as well as a 1-hour Virtual Community of Practice session with an AIM facilitator.

Introduction to English Learners: Language & Literacy Development (2 hours) – Develops foundational knowledge for teachers working with ELs as they progress through language acquisition. Word Recognition Among English Learners (3 hours) – Explores the processes, knowledge, and skills that comprise the lower word strands of Scarborough’s Reading Rope, with specific considerations for the adjustments that educators should make so that ELs thrive.

Language Comprehension Among English Learners (3 hours) – Focuses on the processes, knowledge, and skills that comprise the upper language comprehension strands of Scarborough’s Reading Rope with specific considerations for the instructional adjustments for ELs to develop comprehension at the word, sentence, and text levels. Includes lesson exemplars and routines to support next-day instructional decisions.

This AIM Specialized Reading Knowledge Bundle was created in collaboration with researcher Dr. Elsa Cárdenas Hagan. It is designed for individuals who possess a strong foundational knowledge of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy and are interested in expanding their instructional skills and knowledge. We strongly recommend prior completion of AIM Institute coursework or equivalent IDA-accredited literacy training before enrollment.
